DHORPATAN RESERVE, NEPAL
We assessed the conservation value of Dhorpatan reserve for the charismatic yet globally endangered red panda, in the context of on-going land-use transformation in Nepal. Red pandas occupied 41% of the reserve, influenced by bamboo habitats. They avoided areas with high human activities such as bamboo extraction and livestock grazing. We concluded that long-term persistence of red pandas in Dhorpatan and elsewhere across their range will need prevention of commercial bamboo extraction, coupled with case-specific regulation of human use of red panda habitats.
