KANHA–PENCH, CENTRAL INDIA
Golden jackals are perhaps the most widespread wild canids in India. We examined distribution of golden jackals, factors influencing distribution, and their interactions with free-ranging dogs in central India. Further, we also studied negative interactions between jackals and humans, specifically, jackal depredation on domestic poultry. The paper based on this study is published here.
POACHING AND TRADE, INDIA
Illegal poaching and trade of golden jackals for their body parts, specifically for their illusionary 'horn' or what is locally called siyar singhi is a seemingly widespread, yet under-reported threat for the species in India. As part of the Wild Canids–India Project, we undertook preliminary exploration and analysis of jackal poaching and trade in the country. The report based on this analysis can be accessed here, and the paper based on the report can be accessed here.
