WESTERN GHATS, INDIA
The leopard cat is a common and widespread small wild felid found across the Indian subcontinent. We conducted camera-trap surveys to estimate leopard cat populations in and around 4 protected reserves in the Western Ghats of India (Bhadra, Biligiri, Nagarahole and Bandipur). Bhadra supported around 11 cats per 100 sq. km, followed by Biligiri with around 5 cats per 100 sq. km. There were very few photo-captures from Nagarahole and Bandipur reserves. High local densities in Bhadra and Biligiri were clustered around secondary, disturbed or partially modified forests and human-use areas. The study can be found here.
